Liner Notes:
“Fumbling Towards Ecstasy” is one of my two favorite albums from the 90’s (the other being “OK Computer” by Radiohead). Fumbling was a big part of my college soundtrack. I was lucky enough to see Sarah live on the Fumbling tour, as well. She’s a legend, truly. Such a gifted singer, player and songwriter.
“Wait” is the second song on the album. (I guess I’m working my way through in order, having first covered “Possession”, which is track one. Watch my version with Heather Hersey. The whole album is beautiful, interesting, amazing. I can’t recommend it highly enough.
I have a special association with “Wait”. I heard it once while falling asleep one day, and it has never sounded the same since. It has a magical, dreamlike quality that I relive every time I hear it, especially the last verse (“You know if I leave you now…”). I first covered this song probably 25 years ago, and this is the same arrangement I came up with back then.
Experienced ears will notice the slight vocal doubling heard on the second verse and each chorus. I did that to “cover” the original production, since Sarah doubled her vocals in those same spots. It just sounds nicer to my ears that way, so I did my best to recreate that production technique. I blended in an earlier take, so it’s an actual double, not a virtual one.
Knowing Sarah is Canadian, I enjoyed singing this at my gig in Montreal last weekend, and look forward to my Toronto gig on November 15, 2019.
